Frequently Asked Questions
The answer is originally no. Maytag are famous for their washing machines and then refrigeration. When Maytag bought Amana all refrigeration models produced were identical underneath – but built by Amana.
Yes. Maytag manufactured their own refrigerator range as well as for Admiral and Jenn Air which meant that they could sell a cheaper version. In fact nearly all Admiral and Jenn Air Fridge freezers were Maytag underneath, except for 1-2 years when LG produced Admiral, all went wrong with and downhill for Admiral.
Amana Refrigeration also manufactured side by side refrigerators for other companies to badge with their own brand name for the UK market such as some models of General Electric or GE as well as premium brand manufacturer Gagganeau and Liebherr .Don’t worry if you own a early GE/General Electric, Gaaganeau or a later model Liebherr we can still help if it was a model made by Amana. This could save you time and money as a lot of Amana spares for these manufacturers were a lot more expensive.
We can help as some Amana refrigerator models can be fixed by yourself by depressing some buttons- which we can help you do – to reset. You may not need an engineer to fix at all.

Dependent on model – Older Amana fridge models had it on a metal plate down where the toe grill is. You would remove toe grill (as you would to clean condenser) and in mid centre below where doors meet, it would be located there. On newer Amana fridge models- open fridge door look either on left or right hand inner wall towards the internal top ceiling you will locate a sticker. Most Amana refrigerator models have 3 identifying numbers, Model Number, Serial Number and a MFG NO (manufacturing number). Don’t worry if you can’t find the model number, we can guide you.
95% of the time your Amana fridge freezer compressor and gas would be fine. So normally it would not be the compressor or gas.
Yes – They are similar set up as commercial refrigeration units. Amana fridge Filters need replacing every 6 months, especially in London as water is very hard.
We would recommend annually.
Not all is lost – we would recommend you book in a Amana Service. We also offer annual reminder service by text or email.
Yes we can. Newer models have the water filter located inside the fridge section. Older models it was an optional extra and was located externally usually at rear of the refrigerator.
? Is dependent on model- Call us and ask about our seasonal special offers. Trust us we are very reasonably priced.
Sorry Amana stopped manufacturing refrigeration models for the UK after the merge with Maytag. The latest Amana models started with the letters AC.
Most times the answer is yes. This is because Amana refrigerators were built on quality and not on price which we have found to be the case nowadays. Amana refrigerators have their own unique method of cooling unlike far eastern cheaper/inferior brands. The parts used on Amana refrigerators are tried and tested and are good quality. Even “out of date” food items stored in a Amana refrigerator last longer – we know.
Yes doors can be adjusted, dependent on model and we can supply new hinges and door kits as well. Let’s get your Amana back to life again.
We all know that it can be a nightmare when dealing with some tradesmen especially when they come to your home. We only have the best experienced well mannered engineers. We will properly explain the problem and how to best deal with the repair and what if any part(s) are needed. Our engineer will also give guidance if you so wished and how to maintain or use your Amana refrigerator properly.
Amana Fridge Common Problems/Fixes
It depends on location, and how bad the leak is- if it is only a small amount then worth checking by opening freezer door and checking bottom freezer basket if it is frozen to the base of freezer. If it has then we recommend you run food down and switch off your Amana refrigerator for at least 24 hours. This is to ensure that drain is clear. After 24 hours switch on – hopefully problem solved!
Yes usually at the rear of your Amana you should see a water stop valve. Most Amana models can be easily rolled out.
Make sure metal arm on icemaker is in the down position. Ensure water supply is still on. Check front water dispenser (if your model has one) providing the freezer is below -12 degrees centigrade the icemaker should activate.
Once you change your Amana water filter you should flush the filter. 2-3 jugs of water should be dispensed and spilt into the sink. If no water is dispensing keep depressing as most times this is caused by an airlock, which it will first start spitting water then flowing properly again.
Lower fridge thermostat, ensure there are no obstacles food stuff (jars, tubs, bottles) blocking the airflow vents. Remember it can take 24 hours to stabilise after adjusting thermostat settings.
Ensure water has not been turned off. Checks in freezer ice bin/container too see if there is ice being produced. If ice bin/container is full we suggest you remove empty some ice out and loosen existing ice that remains in bin. Please ensure your ice bin is put back in correctly.
Check fridge thermostat settings if required turn up – the higher the number/letter the colder the fridge. Remember each setting increment can take up to 24 hours to stabilise. Ensure cooling vents are not blocked. Ensure that the condenser is clean.
Check freezer thermostat settings. Check power lights on are. If no fridge power lights then check fuse. Some models can be reset.
Make sure its freezing properly check your ice cream and frozen bread are still frozen as these frozen food items are some of the hardest things to freeze and a good indication of whether your Amana freezer is working properly. If it is a electrical smell or burning smell we suggest you turn your Amana refrigerator off from the plug.
Yes this can happen when the water filter has not been replaced or if one was not fitted. We suggest you replace your water filter and empty and wash out your ice bin. If no water filter was fitted then we suggest you have one fitted.

Sadly, the answer is simply nothing. Unless you have a large budget and larger space, you could consider Sub Zero, otherwise the rest are much of the same all owned by less than a handful of manufacturers offering cheaper builds equating to cheaper prices. All are nearly built in the far east – even German manufacturers are badging their brand name as they do not have the factories to build side by side American style fridges in Europe and it works out cheaper if you brand (put your badge) on a existing model American style refrigerator made in the far east model. Some Manufacturers may build good cars and others build good phones and TV’s but the Kings of Side By Side Reliable Refrigerators are all American, brands such as Amana, Maytag and Admiral. It is very important that should you experience problems with these one of our specialist engineers would be required. Nowadays the refrigerant used in these new American Style far eastern refrigerators is R600a which is highly flammable; it’s a type of calor gas, this leads to massive compressor failures as this type of gas runs on very high pressure and temperature. Your Amana, Maytag and Admiral refrigerators all use coolant/gas R134a, no toxic, non flammable and a much better and stable refrigerant.
